The Daily Show and Katrina: Not the only Complainers

I have to say that I was a little disappointed in the performance of Jon and company at The Daily Show last night. Not that they weren't funny. No, that wasn't really the problem. I think that there was so much going on, and so much to question and/or make fun of, that they couldn't do much more than summarize some of the governmental and media missteps and disgraces during the whole Katrina disaster.

Most of the episode's humor -- and the indignation that has been perfected under Stewart -- came from the federal government's lethargic reaction to the hurricane and expected flood, then Bush's clueless declarations that FEMA head Mike Brown and others in the Homeland Security Department were doing a great job when they really weren't. All good stuff. Problem is, real news reporters have been complaining about these things for a week now, which takes a lot of the teeth out of Jon and the writers' barbs. Could it be that The Daily Show will become ineffective if the real media finally grows some cajones and challenges the officials they cover? Hopefully, the writers will take that in account; I don't want to see TDS start taking itself too seriously.
